Elden Ring: How to Beat Margit, the Fell Omen (Full Boss Guide)
Margit, the Fell Omen is the first real roadblock in Elden Ring, standing between the Tarnished and Stormveil Castle. He is placed early on purpose, to check whether you have learned the game’s combat rhythm before it lets you into the castle. Most first-timers get caught out by his reach and by the red magic hands he conjures out of nowhere.
Where to find Margit
Margit waits at the entrance to Stormveil Castle, in northern Limgrave. You will meet him the first time you approach the castle’s main gate, and a message on the ground warns you before the fight begins. If you are not ready, turn around. Nothing forces you into this fight.
Recommended preparation
A handful of easier objectives first will make this much shorter.
Clear some of the Limgrave overworld. The field bosses, Flying Dragon Agheel and the various camps, hand you Runes and gear well before you need to think about Stormveil. Tree Sentinel is there too if you are feeling brave, though he hits considerably harder than Margit does.
Upgrade your flask count and your weapon. Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears raise your flask count at Sites of Grace, and Smithing Stones from the Limgrave caves will get your main weapon to +3. That upgrade level matters more here than your character level does.
Grab a Spirit Ash. The Lone Wolf Ashes come very early, during the tutorial area, and they are excellent in this fight because three wolves split Margit’s attention and interrupt his attack strings.
It is also worth talking to Rogier in the Church of Elleh. His dialogue points toward tools that make the fight easier, including a hint about the item below.
The Margit’s Shackle item
This is the single biggest tip for a first Margit attempt. Margit’s Shackle can be bought from the Nomadic Merchant south of the Church of Elleh, following the road down from the starting area. Using it during the fight briefly stuns him and gives you several free hits.
It is cheap and available before you ever walk through the fog, so there is little reason to skip it if you are struggling. Consumables are part of how Elden Ring expects you to solve encounters like this one, and the game hands you this particular tool right next to the particular boss it works on.
Phase 1 strategy
Margit’s opening phase mixes melee strings with ranged magic hand projectiles.
The most important thing to learn is the reach on his staff attacks. Several of his combos look finished after two hits, then extend into a delayed third swing. Do not roll away early. Wait for the actual last hit, then punish.
When he conjures a cluster of magic hands above his head, that is your cue to back off, or to put a wall or pillar between you. It is a ranged combo that is genuinely hard to dodge at close range until you have seen it a few times.
His jump attack is your friend. He occasionally leaps backward and slams down, and the recovery on that move is one of the most reliable openings in the fight. Two or three hits with a mid-speed weapon fit comfortably.
Throughout, let your Spirit Ash pull his attention. Those windows are when you heal and reposition, not when you squeeze in extra damage.
Phase 2 strategy (below 50% health)
Once Margit drops past roughly half health he gets noticeably more aggressive.
He gains a hammer slam combo with wider tracking, so rolling sideways works better here than rolling straight back. He will also throw his staff like a javelin if you disengage too far, which punishes players who try to kite him. Stay in mid-range and look for openings instead.
His grab attack does heavy damage and cannot be blocked, only dodged. When you see him reach forward with a glowing hand, roll through the attack rather than away from it.
Recommended builds for this fight
Margit falls to almost any build, but a few approaches are smoother for newer players.
A Strength or quality melee build with a shield lets you chip-block his weaker jabs while you wait for a punish window. Bleed builds using twinblades or curved swords proc blood loss quickly and take large chunks off in phase 1, before he speeds up. Sorcery builds work at mid-range with Glintstone Pebble, paired with a Spirit Ash to keep him occupied.
Whichever you pick, learning his moveset pays off more than raw stats do. Margit punishes greedy attacks far more harshly than he punishes being slightly under-leveled.
Common mistakes to avoid
Attacking after a two-hit combo out of habit is the most common reason new players eat damage during a punish. Those delayed third hits catch nearly everyone at least once.
Ignoring Spirit Ashes is the second. Some players treat summons as cheating, but they are a core intended tool, and Margit specifically is tuned around players having access to them this early.
Fighting him at very low level with no upgrades is possible and needlessly painful. Twenty minutes of exploring Limgrave first changes the fight completely.
Finally, panic rolling during the red hands combo usually puts you straight back into the hitbox. Move laterally, or get behind cover.
What you get for winning
Defeating Margit rewards the Talisman Pouch, which permanently raises the number of talismans you can equip at once, plus a large Runes payout. It also opens the road into Stormveil Castle and everything that follows it.
If you have made several attempts and still cannot find an opening, leaving is a legitimate answer. Explore more of Limgrave, come back with more flasks and a stronger weapon, and the same patterns will read much more slowly the second time around.

- Can I skip Margit?
- Yes. Margit blocks the main path into Stormveil Castle, but you can explore Limgrave, level up, and come back later. He does not have to be defeated immediately.
- What does Margit drop?
- Defeating Margit rewards the Talisman Pouch, which lets you equip an additional talisman, plus a large chunk of Runes.
